KATHERTXK GREY IN* "THE THIRD DEGREE."—TO-XIGHT. At the Theatre Royal this evening Miss Catherine Grey, Mr. William Desmond and J. C. Williamson's powerful dramatic organisation will stage for the first and only time here Charles Klein's great masterpiece, "The Third Degree." The occasion will be h particularly noteworthy one from the fact that 'it Will mark the final appearance here of unquestionably the greatest emotional iWtre9S.w]l9 has ever toured New Zealand under the J, C. Williamson management. Miss Grey's performance in "The Lion and' the Mouse" proved this, and her brilliant acting in this piece, combined with the reports from Auckland and Wellington to the effect that she rise» to greater heights of her wonderful emotional power in "The Third Degree" is probably responsible for the verv heavy demand for seats which has taken place, and to-night's production will probably be witnessed by a packed house. Every endeavor has been made by the management. to prolong Miss Grey's stay in Australasia, but without sucecss,' as although the actress herself is willing, her contracts, made a long way ahead, will not permit it, and she is definitely booked to re-open the Millionaires' Theatre, New 1 ork, in a play which has been specially written for her by one of America's leading dramatists' The inteVest in "The Third Degree" commences at curtain rise, and one exciting event follows another right up to the close of the performance. The scene which presents young Howard Jeffries being interrogated under the "third degree" system is said to be sensational in the 'extreme, and Miss Grey's portrayal of the grief-' stricken and purposeful' wife who fights desperately for her husband's life "has done more than anything else to make the present tour so phenomenally successful. As Richard Brewster, the famous constitutional lawyer, Mr. William Desmond is given greater opportunities than in "The Lion and the Mouse," and elsewhere be has been lavishly praised for his brilliant acting. The plans are at Collier's, where day sales can also be purchased. The company will leave for YVangaiwi to-morrow morning. AMY CASTLES' FAREWELL CONCERTS. Miss Amy Castles' concert recitals promise to be successful in every way. Enquiries for seats have been incessant at the Dresden since the announcement of the gifted singer's coming. Miss Castles, who has not inaptly been called the "Australian Jenny Lind." needs 110 'introduction to musical lovers of this country. It is not inopportune, however, to review the leading episodes of her life—a life full of incident though [ covering a verv short period. There are but few, if any. great living singers who can claim the distinction of having won fame so early in life. Miss Castles' first tour of Australia was one long scries of notable triumphs, and the welcome she again received 011 her return, after an absence of eight years, was amongst the most memorable epochs of Australia's musical world. "Miss Castles will be supported by ITerr Alexander Camphausen (bass baritone), Herr Louis TTattenbach ('cellist), mid Mr. William Conway (pianist). The box plans for the one concert at the Theatre Royal, Monday March 20, are announced to open at Collier's on Tuesday next, Mifrch Nth. A special reserve has been set apart for country patrons, and already lar.ri •cction of these lias been taken up.
