A Berne cablegram announces that Miss Asquith, daughter ot England's Premier, is suhi'i-ing I'roui bronchial catarrh, but is now out of danger. Mr. and Mrs. Asquith, wiio were sent for hurriedly, are returning to England. A London telegram reports the death of the Marquis of Ailesbury at the age of 08. He succeeded to the title in 1894. His heir is the Earl of Cardigan, his eldest son, who is :>7 years of age.

Mr. D. McLaren, M.P., and Mr. Mack, one of the leading officials in the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, paid a visit to New Plymouth on Saturday, and met the members of the local branch of the society to discuss various matters of interest to the service.

The death i<j reported of Mr. Harry Powdrell, brother of Mr. W. 1). Powdrell, of Hawera, which took place in Mashonaland, South Africa, on February 15. Deceased, who was only 33 yea is of age, was highly popular wherever he was known. He served with Huberts' Horse in the South African war. Cabled advice has been received in Wellington of the death at Enfield, London, of Mr. George Spicer, one of tbi senior members of the firm of James Spicer and Co., Ltd., and youngest brother of Sir Albert P. Spicer, M.P., for Central Hackney, who visited New Zealand last year at the conclusion ; of the congress of the Empire Chambers of Commerce at Sydney. There was a "gathering round the stone" in the Daily News office on Saturday afternoon to bid farwell to Mr. C. L. Grant, who is leavihg to take up a responsible position on the staff of the Eltham Argus. On behalf of the staff, Mr. T. C. List, the proprietor, presented Mr. Grant with a case of selffilling fountain pens, and wished him every prosperity in his new sphere of work,' thanking him for his very able and willing service on this paper.

The deathannounced by the Palmerston papers of Mrs. Job Vile, widow of the late Job Vile, who, it may be remembered, died suddenly at Marton close on six years ago during tlie excitement of the general election day, Mr. Vile being a candidate for Manawatu. The deceased lady, who has been residing in- Wanganui since 'the death of her husband, was on a visit to her son at Bulls, where she died on Wednesday, at the age of 04 years. Mrs. Vile had eleven sons and one daughter.

The death took place at Wellington on Thursday of Mr. Henry Smith. On the previous evening lie received a paralytic stroke, and never regained eonsciousness. Deceased, who was seventyfour years of age, leaves a widow, six son and three daughters. Three of tho sons and the three daughters reside in Wellington. Oil December 17th, 1855, Mr. Smith enllsfect Itf tltf 1M Lancers,' while in his eighteenth year, and on December 19th, 1850, landed in the East Indies. After being transferred to the sth Regiment in 1858-0, h'e took part in the battles of Bandy. Panwarvie, and the relief of Kirwee. On one occasion ho received a wound in the breagt while being rescued from some Sepoys. Deceased was discharged in April, 1801, ftnd married in London in 1803. He emigrated to New Zealand thirty-seven years ago, in the ship Succour, com-: manded by Captain Adams, and landed at Wellington, where he remainod.
