DISTRICT NEWS.

TIKORANGI. (From our Own Correspondent). It is infinitely more pleasing to commend the public actions of members of local bodies than id criticise them, and the Clifton County Council is certainly to be congratulated on its adoption ot Cr. O'Sullivan's resolution in reference to recovering rates from occupiers of native lfflds. The council's efforts, which have in the past been mainly devoted to attempting to recover from the native owners, are now to be directed towards the occupiers, and if councillors loyally support Cr. O'Sullivan, insisting on the resolution being given effect to , in its entirety, and studiously avoid assuming the role of advocates for the oc- * cupiers, then beneficial results are bound to follow. The picnic in connection with the Anglican Church, which was held last week, was an unqualified success. The ladies of the district undertook the catering and, as usual, provided an excellent spread. The usual games and races were indulged in, and every child went home happy, contented, and'triumphant in the proud possession of a prize or present of some sort. The cricket match was again won by the married men, after a close finish, by 13 runs. The players to reach double figures were 11. Foreman 17, H. Hicks 10, A. Soffe 14, C. Oliver 11; and for the single men A. Jupp 22, and J. Lye 10. I regret to report that the condition of Mrs. R. Rolfe, who has been seriously ill for some time, is such that it was deemed advisable to Temove her to the New Plymouth hospital. Xowithstnnding the drv weather latelv experienced, the local dairv company manufactured lSOOlhs more butter in Februarv than in tho corresponding month last year.
