KATHERINE GREY IX •'THE THIRD DEGREE." At Collier's at 8.30 this morning the box plan will be opened for the only production here on Monday night next by J. C. Williamson's Katherine Grey Dramatic Co. of "The Third Degree." The occasion will be. particularly noteworthy from the fact that it will mark the final appearance here of Miss Katherine Grey, the brilliant American actress, who luis been declared by Press and playgoers the greatest emotional actress who has ever visited New Zealand. The situations in "The Third Degree" are said to bo intensely and thoroughly dramatic, and the principal characters are drawn with much power and breadth of conception. Whilst the play is so strong as to keep thei audience tense with excitement in the more critical parts there is no exaggeration of details. The story is plainly told, but told with so much dramatic force as to make as much impression on the audience as a piece of such tragic character, say, as ''La Tosca." The part of Mrs. Howard Jeffries, junr., the principal feature of the dramatic picture, though seeming simple, is in reality both complex and exacting. Nothing, it is said, is more artistic tliroughout the whole of the trying scenes of the play than the interpretation of Miss Katherine Grey. With all the intensity and dramatic force, she infuses into the interpretation of the part, Miss Grey, it is said, never loses sight of the one important factor that to act it would at once destroy its strength. The result is she gives a performance which never fails to arouse audiences to a high pitch of excitement, and in Wellington it was a common occurrence to witness the audience standing up and cheering the talented American actress for her brilliant acting. The company are enjoying a record season in Auckland, which will be brought to a close on Saturday night.
