SALVATION ARMY CONGRESS. By Telegraph,—Preset Atoouiauou. Wellington, Last Night. Brigadier Bray, iu charge of the Solvation Army'B social uperatious in the North Island, leaves on Friday for London to act us the Dominion's represeu' tative at the Congress of heads of tU Army's social work throughout th» world. The Congress, which commences on May sth, and will occupy three weeks, is the first occasion on which a congress has been held solely of heads of the Army social work. In connection therewith, a grand demonstration is to be held in Albert Hall under General Booth, at which exhibitions will be given of social work in foreign countries and the overseas dominions, and papers will be read by various delegates. During Brigadier Bray's absence, Major Toomer, in charge of the People's Palace, Auck land, will take up as many of the former's duties as possible. A LICENSEE IX TROUBLE. Wanganui, Last Night. At a meeting of tne licensing committee to-day, J. W. Bines, licensee of theAlbion Hotel, was asked to show cause why his license should not be cancelled. Ihe police alleged that the house was not kept in a clean condition, and that the licensee had allowed drunken men to* be found on the premises. The committee adjourned the case for a month to allow the licensee to transfer his lease.

LAND FOR VETERANS. ¥ Auckland, Monday. As a result of the Government's promise to reward the veterans who have seen native service in New Zealand, no less than 188 claims for land have been lodged to date at the Auckand Magistrate's Court. Two of these have been held over pending the receipt of certain information from the Home authorities, and invesigation resulted in six being recommended. Twenty were deferred and the rest thrown out

A DESERTER SENTENCED. T . _ Wellington, Monday. John Symons, a seaman who deserted from the Turakina just before she left for London, was to-<lay sentenced to one month s imprisonment.

STREET BETTING. Wellington, Monday. Henry .Tackson, said to be a waters.dc worker, was fined £ 25 and cost, for street betting.
