Lord Crewe incidentally described one of the clauses as similar to the Queensland measure of 1907, the only Act in the world applying the referendum to the case of a deadlock "between the two Houses. ' Lords Selbourne and Tennyson supported the Bill. Lord Lorebourne contended that it would be unworkable in a large and busy population, which would prefer trusting its competent chosen representatives.
