A peerage has been conferred on Sir Edward Tenriant, brother of Mrs. Asquith. ■
Mr. Will Perry left on Friday night en route for England. He expects to be back about the end of the year. Mr. McNab, of Palmerston North, has been appointed a Governor of the Victoria College, vice Mr.' Quick, resigned.
Mr. and Mrs. Ken. Webster left on Saturday morning on a fortnight's trip through the Waireki Valley, Lake Taupo and Tokanu country.
Constable Wright has been transferred from Te Wera to Whangamomona, his place at Te Wera being taken by Con-, stable .Scannell, ol Wangunui. The Cabinet at Friday's meeting appointed Captain Renaut, of the Union Company's Kaiapoi, Assistant Superintendent of Marine at Auckland. Lord Denman confirms the announcement of his appointment as GovernorGeneral of Australia. He will wait till after the coronation and sail at the end of June.
The London Chroncile's Johannesburg correspondent states that if his visit to Europe does not improve .General Botha's health he will probably retire ■from politics. ' * Dr. F. W. Ward left by the mail train for Wellington on Saturday morning. After a short stay there he returns to Auckland to catch the Moldavia for Sydney on March 10. It has been definitely decided that Lieut.-Colonel Abbott. D.5.0., Auckland, Captain Seddon, Defence stall', Lieutenant Standish, lloyal New Zealand Artillery, and Lieutenant Turnbull, at present attending Tauherinikau camp, are to go Home this month for a course of military training. Hon. W. C. Smith, M.L.C., aged 07, died at Waipukurau On Sunday after noon, at 1.30, after ten days' illness from pneumonia, says a Napier telegram. The Hon. W. C. Smith was born in London in 1843, and was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Barnet, England. In 1862 he arrived in this Dominion, and we first find him in local politics in 1877, when he became a member of the Waipukurau road board. He became its chairman two years later, and held the position for a couple of years. 1-Ie afterwards took his full share in local government, holding seats on the Waipawa County Council, hospital board, and so on. It was in 1881 that he was first elected to the House *%of Representatives for Waipawa, and in 1891 to 1893 he was Government whip for the Ballance ministry. He was elevated to the Legilsative Council in 1895, and was of committees in that chamber in 1902, 1905 and 1907.
