CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

I MONTHLY MEETING. i | The usual monthly meeting of the I Council was held at'Waitara yesterday, ■and was attended by Messrs' ,1. For'e- ' man (chairman), E. Julian, '!'. Mackenzie, C. O'Sullivan, H. Musker, ,S. J. Kcnningtoii, and 11. Sander. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Xorth Matau bridge has been satisfactorily completed. The large culvert on the Ngatoto road has been stripped, all new timber required is on the ground, and the work would .soon be completed. Plans of the Mangaowata bridge have been submitted to the road engineer, and upon approval it is proposed to call for tenders. Signatures for consent to Otaraoa road deviation are being sought, and when obtained tenders will be called for the work. Messrs. Sayer report having CO pieces of timber cut, and ask for an extension of time to complete the work, which will be inspected next week. f FOREMEN'S REPORTS. Foreman Topping, Tarata, reported that the first small bridge on Pukelio road was in a bad state of decay, and he recommended shifting the bridge about two chains to the lower end oi idling, as the creek overflowed and washed over the road at Hood time. The small bridge opposite Mr. Burr's, Junction road, required re-decking. Surfaceman Rolfe drew the council's attention to the state of the bridges at Matau. The report sent in by W. Schmidt on work done on the Okau road was approved, and authority to purchase fivi* kegs of powder and 12 coils of fuse was given. MOHAKATINO VALLEY ROAD. The Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote stating that the sum of £342 for the Mohakatino Valley road, which the council had refused, had been made available for expenditure by the resident engineer. PUKEARUHE ROAD. Mr. W. J. Parsons, hon. secretary Pukearuhe settlers, wrote stating that the settlers were asking the Government' to grant a £ for £ subsidy for deviation and metalling the main road. On the suggestion of Mr. Jennings, M.P., he asked that the council's . engineer submit a report recommending tint work; that the council signify its approval and grant £3OO towards the cost, and supply the following information: The number of years the road has been in use; the cost and date of the deviation carried out some years ago; and a statement of the last loan ol £OOO.

The council is willing to adhere to its promise made to expend £3OO towards metalling and deviation on main south road, Pukearuhe, £IOO having been already spent in metalling, and the balance of £2OO is available for expenditure in proposed deviation, provided the settlcr,s obtain the balance of money required to do the work. NOXIOUS WEEDS.

Mr. C. Zachariah, reserves agent, New Plymouth, wrote re the clearing ol noxious weeds on section 4, block 4, Waitara, S.D., and acknowledging claim for £3 12s, being amount expended on the work. The writer stated that the principal beneficiary in the block considered the money should come out ot the gravel money which the council owed him.—Referred to the engineer. MATAi: TO MANGAOAPA ROAD. The Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote stating that or the amount (£100) appearing upon the Estimates for the road £O3 had been already expended, leaving a balance of £3S, which had been offered for expenditure to the council. URUTI BRIDGE. Hon. R. Mackenzie, Minister of Public Works, acknowledged receipt of the council's letter requesting £IOO for. building a bridge over the Uruti stream, and stated that he was again looking into the position. '. REQUESTS. j

Mr. Thos. Waitc, Tarata, asked the council's permission to erect a fence close to the road in front of section 23, block 3, and section 13,' block 10, as there was a bad gully on the fence line along the road; the narrowest place on the road between the fence and the bank would be about 20ft.—Agreed to, subject to the approval of the surfaceman, no barb wire to be used. Mr. Ernest Gibson, Urenui, having acquired section 3, block 7, situate at the junction' of the Mataro and Ohangiiho roads, asked .permission to erect fence on the latter road.—Held over. i

Mr. E. Julian, Waitara, applied for permission to erect fence on Matapo road in front of section 1, bl°ek 12, Waitara Survey District, so as to fence off a dangerous cliff.—Agreed to. Messrs. Jupp and Mallett, Uruti, applied for permission to erect a verandah at their new store on Mimi-Mokau and Uruti roads; also for permission to shift metal from present site to the front of the new store.—Agreed to, the work to be done to Cr. Musker's approval. GENERAL. Cr. Julian moved, Cr. Mackenzie seconded, and it was carried: That the matter of ascertaining the quantity of gravel, if any, taken out of native land on Mimi-Mokau road be referred to the engineer, requesting him to supply the information. Mr. "Murray, resident road engineer, New Plymouth, forwarded voucher for £lO for cleaving slips and improving two miles of Marco road. The Under-Secretary, office of Internal Affairs, Wellington, forwarded information concerning the making of by-laws. —Resolved that the council take the necessary steps under "The By-Laws Act, 1910,'' to have the by-laws confirmed. Mr. Arch Ifarrc, Rerekapa, reported by letter to Cr, O'Sullivan damage (o bridge over the Para stream through the falling of a tree. He would repair the bridge for £5 10s.—Offer accepted. FIXAXCE. The amounts of £l9 10s 8d (accrued thirds to September "0, 1910, on Crown Lands) and £99 15s lid (£ for £ on formation, etc.. Mataro road) have been placed to the council's credit. I Accounts amounting to £758 5s Sd wcie passed for payment.
