CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER
AS THE RESULT OF A ROW. By Tslegruph.—Pre«« Association. Auckland, Tuesday. William Osborne was charged at the Police Court to-day with manslaughter in connection with the death of Mary Gilchrist, who resided in White Street. Sub-Inspector Hendry stated that the woman led an immoral life and kept accused in idleness. On December 20 accused beat her so badly that her body was bruised and two ribs broken! Accused was tried for assault, and during the hearing of the case the woman cried out that the assault wa* her fault and not the fault of prisoner, but prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. On January 7 the woman was found dead, and a post-mortem examination showed that death resulted from the rupture of a blood vessel, accelerated by the broken ribs, but the condition of her body was such that she could not have lived long in any case.
A boy of sixteen years deposed to seeing a row in the house, when accused hit deceased, who was put to bed,! and later was found on the floor.
At this stage the court was adjourned till Wednesday.
