AMERICAN MEAT COMBINE
ITS OPERATIONS IX AUSTRALIA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 28. Stock-.selling agents were not communicative when questioned regarding the prospects of the American meat combine operating in Australia. They admitted that representatives of the combine attended the sales, and also that they had been negotiating for the purchase of at least one meat company. The visitors were spoken of as representatives of Swift's, but it is understood that they really represented the combined meat-packers of America, with a capital of £40,000,000. Their present operations appear to be confined to purchasing preserved mutton and beef. Melbourne, February 28. The Minister of Customs, it is stated, has learned on good authority that the trust is trying to dispose of some of its shares in Australia, with the object of getting important Australians into the trust and so securing a firm footing.
