The Sei'iMfry Preservation Commission was waited upon, to-day by a representative deputation, which urged that the land be acquired along the banks of the Maitai river as a public resort, the eaate having, recently been closed to the public. The Cum mission will report to the Government, on the subject. NAPIER'S PROGRESS. Napier, Last Night. At a committee meeting of the Napier Borough Council it was decided to instruct the Hon. W. Pitt, of Melbourne, who was in attendance, to draw up plans and specifications for a municipal theatre, alternative tenders to he called for a theatre and for whole municipal buildings respectively. Mr. Pitt advised ■that a theatre to cost from .£IB,OOO to £20,000 would be capable of seating 1500, while a loan provides for the expenditure of £2.i,000 for a theatre and municipal buildings combined.
