RECORD STATISTICS. Sydney, February 23. The births last year were 45,333, a record number: the birth rate was 27.32 per 101*0. The deaths numbered 10,191, the death rate being 10.44 per 1000, the highest for three years. The deaths from phthisis were the lowest on record, and those from cancer slightly above the average. The number of marriages was 14,294, a record. The estimated population of- the State was 1,090,310, the year's increase being 44,872. , MUTUAL LIFE COMPANY. Sydney, February 23. The annual report of the Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Company will show that the new business for the year in the ordinary branch was 13,011 policies assuring £2,501,244, and yielding new premiums of £83,316. The total business in force £338,993 policies, assuring £'2G,BO-2,755, including bonus additions. BIG PROFITS. Melbourne, February 23. The profits of Howard Smith and Co. for the year are £01,185 compared with £55,227 in the previous year. A dividend of ten per cent, has been declared. SLACKNESS IN TRADE. Sydney, February 23. A deputation informed Mr. Carmichael that there was a very large number of unemployed in the Newcastle district 1 owing to the slackness of trade. A COSTLY CASE. Melbourne, February 23.
