THE DAVIS CUP

CHALLENGE FROM AMERICA. PLAY TO TAKE PLACE IN NEW ZEALAND. The doubts as to whether there would ,be a contest for the Davis Cup this year ■were sot at rest (says the Sydney .Morn-' ing Herald) by a cable received by Mr. T. H. Hicks, secretary of the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association, from Dr. D.wigrrt, president of the American Lawn Tennis Association. It is as follows: ."Challenge Davis Cup." It is a source of satisfaction to tennis enthusiasts that America has seen fit to attempt to wrest the eup from Australasia. The matches on (his occasion will he played in New Zealand. The latest date upon which challenges can be made is the first Monday in March, so there is yet plenty of time for I'jigland to also issue a challenge. Judgiig from the annual report of the parent Association, it did not look at all likely that fireat Britain would send a team to Australia, hut letters recently received stated that there was a likelihood of a challenge being issued. In the event of Great Britain also issuing a challenge, the two countries will arrange between themselves where the prelimir/ary tie .shall be played. Tn the event of their not being able to agree they wiM play either in Australia or New .Zealand, and the winner will play the challenge round against Australasia in New Zealand.
