RIFLE SHOOTING
TARANAKI RIFLE ASSOCIATION". THE ANNUAL MEETING. Yesterday morning the Taranaki Rillft Association opened its annual meeting on the Rewa Rewa range. The weathei was fine, hut a rather strong hreeze blew right across the range. The entries were thirteen more than last year's, and competition was keen. The shooting was very good all round. During the day 21 "possibles were obtained, viz., two at 200, sixteen at 500, one at (iOO, and two at 800 yards. The possible was put on by Private Chappell, of the Waitara Rifles, in the first match of the day, the Waitara .Match, of, 200 and 50b yards. The Association has bestirred itself in the matter of improvements on the range since last meeting. A line roomy puvillion faces the range, from the verandah of which spectators can view the progress of the shooting. The shade of the pavilion was very acceptable to all, and especially the competitors, after the heat of firing on the mounds. Since last year the mounds have been extended a little, and next year more targets will probably be fixed. The management of the meeting is in capable hands. The president of the Association, Lieut-Colonel Okey, was in attendance all day, and took particular interest in the firing parties, besides exercising a general supervision. The secretarial duties were divided between the secretary (private T. King, Inglewood) and Lieut. Turner (Patea Rifles), who occupied the position of treasurer in lieu of Captain Mills. Both Private King and Lieutenant Turner were unremitting in their attention to duty, and courteous and obliging to all who sought information. .Lieutenant Messenger, on the unattached list, and Lieutenant Boon (Guards) were range officers for,the day, and were assiduous in their attention to detail.
