TOURING SCIENTISTS

A CANADIAN CONFERENCE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Ottawa, February 17. A thousand of the world's leading geologists will tour Canada in 1912 after the international congress at Toronto. A VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. The Prime Minister was approached at Chvistchnrch the other day by a deputation with the object of securing the Government's assistance in arranging a visit to New Zealand in 1914 of leading British and American scientists. The British Association for the Advancement of Science will meet that year in Australia, and this gathering is to be handsomelv subsidised by the Commonwealth Government. The deputation, which comprised Professors Kastcrfield, Laby, Von ZedliU and Kirk, and Mr. A. Hamilton (representing the New Zealand Institute), stated that when the Australian meeting was over it was hoped that about twenty-five of the leading British scientists attending it wouhf be induced to visit New Zealand on the return journey, and that a number of prominent American scientists could be invited to meet them in the dominion. Addresses could be delivered in one of the centres, and the scientists of New Zealand would have the advantage of being able to consult with their distinguished co-workers. New Zealand would also have the advantage of receiving a good advertisement in two continents. The deputation suggested that if the Government would provide about .02000. the remaining expenses could be met privately, the visitors being received in private homes. The Prime Minister asked the deputation to submit the proposal in writing, giving the complete detail. He would then consider it carefully, and bring the matter before his colleagues for a decision.
