OIL SHALE DEPOSITS
A PROSPECTIXC. C'OMPAXY. By Telegraph.—Press Association, invercargill. Last Xight. A prospecting company is being formed to prove tlie shale deposits in the Waikaia district. The shale, according to (lovernnu'iit analysis, is of bettor quality than the usual Scotch shales, and engineers report that the deposit probably extends over 2(10 acres in a 10-feet seam. Tlie deposit is not a recent discovery, but has been disposed of by small owners to the dredges as lignite at 6s a ton, indicating easy mining, and the output from ly. acres'has been 30,000 tons. Three shallow bores, at a cost of £3OO, are recommended'to prove the real extent and nature of the deposit. That is the purpose of the present company, which, if successful, will make further developments.
