The autumn.. meeting of the Club opened in splendid weather yesterday, and there was. a large attendance, the amount taken at the gates being a record. The course was not as hard as might have been expected after the trying hot weather of the past month, thanks to the foresight of the executive in having it well watered just before the meeting, and the going was suitable for the horses, so that it can be taken for granted there will not be many defections from the lists for to-day's events on this account. The lawn and surroundings were in capital order, and gradually the club is effecting improvements, bringing the meeting up to the standard commensurate with its importance in the sporting world. The public is recognising this, too, as is shown by the increased attendances, while the large nominations which have been received prove conclusively the growing popularity of the gatherings held under the auspices of the club among owners. The fields during yesterday's racing were, therefore, large, and some keenly-fought-out finishes were witnessed.

It was unfortunate that a dense pall of smoke enveloped the groiinds, makinc it impossible to distinguish the colors of the riders as they traversed the back of the course; inueed, to the naked eye, the horses were difficult to separate at a distance of a couple .of furlongs. Speculation was brisker by £lflS< than at the 1910 autumn meeting, due, no doubt, to the absence of the pencilling fraternity, which may now be reasonably referred to as a : closed hook!" The total amount put through the machine was £8057 10s, as against £6370 10s on the first day of the 1910 meeting.

During the afternoon Perry's orchestra discoursed sweet music to'patrons by whom- the change from the brass band music was generally well received. In the well-selected programme which was rendered was a specially pretty waltz called 'Spring Morning," which is a composition by Mr. F. Von Lubbe, New Plymouth, that is bound to become popular as soon as it is put on the market. Mr. .Whittle's "Red House" booth appeared to be well patronised, us also was the. case with all the refreshment places Following arc the details of the racing: FIRST HANDICAP HACK HURDLES, of SO jsovs, second horse 10 sovs from the stakes; one mile and a half A.
