ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
"I DID MY hEST." By Telegraph.—Press Association. ( Dnnedin, Lost Night. An old-ape pensioner named Alexander North, 75 years of age. appeared .in the Police Court today to answer a charge of attempting to commit suicide. When asked to plead, accused said, "'[ plead guilty. T can't do anything else, I did my best." Station-Sergeant King said that at half-past seven this morning the police, were told that a man had been picked out of tile harbor. A constable found the accused in a boat with two men, who had pulled him out of the harbor. Accused, who smelt of drink when arrested, said he had had a lot of worry. When accused was taken to the police station be was put in a padded cell, and his clothes taken from him. He was afterwards found attempting to suffocate himself by shoving the end of a blanket down his throat. The Magistrate remanded the accused for seven days. In the meantime he could be examined, and full enquiries made about him.
