WRECK OF A STEAMER
RACING IN A FOG. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 15. The New Guinea has slipped back from the rocks, and only the bridge is visible. The owners have been advised that she is a total wreck. The boats had a rough time after leaving the steamer, owing to the strong wind and opposing currents. One gave up and returned. The others were driven twelve miles to sen, and drifted about for hours before tney were able to make,the land. Some suffered severely from their heavy exertions in the rough sea, and from exposure. The boatswain of the New Guinea, in an interview, stated: that at the time of the mishap, they were racing the steamer Barron, which was following, and they ran into a thick fog. Suddenly they noticed the land right ahead. The order full speed astern was given, but before there was time to lose way the vessel ran on the rocks.
