PERTH MURDER TRIAL
THE KILLING OP ETHEL HARRIS. SMART BEFORE THE COURT. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 15, I.G a.m. Perth, February 15. At the trial of Smart for the murder of Ethel Harris, medical evidence was to the effect that the body was buried before rigor mortis occurred. There was human blood and hair on an iron bar which was exhumed. A witness deposed that cart tracks near the sanitary depot corresponded with the marks of Smart's cart, which were unusual. The manager of the foundry said that Smart was absent from work on March 14 and 15. He complained of sickness, but attended to his horse. A blacksmith said he saw Smart spreading ashes in the shed where the body was buried. He asked Smart why he did not take, the ashes to the reclamation works, and he replied that the authorities would not allow it. This was contrary to fact, the authorities being anxious to get such material.
