ETHICS OF THE PRESS

j COI.'Xi'ILLOI! Gll.liEl!'J"S lIAKANGUE. In replying to the words of welcome of His Worship the Mayor at Monday night's meeting of the I'.orough Council, Cr. Huttimore took occasion to thank the editor of the Taranaki Herald for reference made to Cr. Hartnell and himself as representatives for East \Vard. His Worship: I don't altogether agree with the statements in the paper. "f was very sorry," said Cr. Gilbert, "to see the article in the Herald, and 1 think that if the proprietor and editor 1 of the paper feel they are competent to improve borough affairs they should stand for election. It must be taken as evidence of conlidence in the ordinary members of the Council that the ratepayers have elected those two members. I really think that the papers have no right to criticise these unknown, although prominent business men. They have every light to come forward when asked by the ratepayers, and, if not, 1 think we would be quite. satisfied if the, editor and proprietor stood and took the places even of ourselves. It appears to me that, editors of newspapers and those associated with the press consider themselves competent, to, run a town. Jf they have all the brains they claim to have in road formation, bridge building, etc., they should come forward and give their scr'vices : for the benefit of the ratepayers, without listening to a loti of street talk, which a large number of the leading articles are made up from. It was madil to appear that members of the Council' were not actuated with a .desire to see the town progress,' and the article .was;'running them down. 1 ani certain, "vour Worship, that in your ellorts to help, the councillor* have given you their support and have not gone against you in any progressive step that has been taken." , His Worship: I have nothing to dowitn the papers, and, of course, don't take much notice of'them, at least, not in-these tilings.

Cr. Gilbert: That is n pity; if you did, perhaps we would get better reports and better justice.
