Two constables patrolling near Headford, in Galway, heard shots fired at midnight into the domicile of William Burke, whose son was employed on the farm of a widow named Ryan. The latter was under police protection owing to threats unless her farm was relinquished. The constables, pursuing, fired at the shooters, but without result. They entered the house of another man named Burke, and found a gun still smoking. The occupier's sons, Patrick and Richard, were arrested, THE SHEEHAN TRAGEDY. Received 14, 1.10 a.m. London, February 13. Evidence from Cranmore is to the effect that Sheehan was shot at a distance of four yards. An open verdict was returned. The Coroner remarked that this crime would do untold injury at a time when things looked bright for Ireland.
