STATE COAL MINES

A WESTPORT PROTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport,'Last Night. At a meeting of the Westport Chamber of Commerce to-day, it was decided to write a protest to the Minister about the slackness of work at the Seddonville State coal mine, members alleging that miners were doing only one or two days' work per week; also to protest against the closing of the briquette works. Members stated that no systematic attempt had been made to push sales of briquettes and eggettes, and the Government Departments were using Newcastle coal instead of coal from their own mines. The ultimate effect would be a considerable loss of mining population to New Zealand. It was decided to ask the Miners' Union to support the protest and if no satisfaction is forthcoming, to hold a public meeting on the question.
