Received 9, 9.55 p.m. Melbourne, February 9. The by-election for the Batman seat in the Federal House resulted in the return of Mr, Brennan, a Labor candidate. IMPROVING SCHOOLS. Received 9, 5.20 p.m. Sydney, February 9. Mr. Beeby, as part of the enlarged educntion policy, proposes to spend a quarter of a million in bringing school buildings and playing areas to a better standard.
BUILDERS' LABORERS' STRIKE. Received 9, 8.20 p.m. Brisbane, February 9. Tiie builders' laborers' strike continues, and there is no indication of a settlement. A MARATHON RUNNER. Received 9, 8/20 p.m. Sydney, February 9. Fitzgerald, the Marathon runner, is a passenger by the Maheno. NEW SOUTH WALES. Received 10, 0.35 a.m. Sydney, February 9. New South Wales is arranging a loan of £700,000 from the Federal Government on the same terms as the Victorian Government loan.
