Tn the Supreme Court to-day a verdict of not guilty was returned by the jury in the case in which William Linton was charged with intent to commit rape. SENTENCED FOR ASSAULT. Wellington, Yesterday. In .sentencing Henry Joseph Clements to eight months' imprisonment for havint- assaulted Vance Clifford hicock on tlie head with a bottle, Mr. Justice Chapman said: '•Yesterday the jury brought in a verdict of common assault, but I cannot shut my eyes to the fact that what they choose to term common assault caused serious injuries. No doubt the true explanation is that the jurv, which had been out three hours, had dillienltv in arriving at n unanimous verdict, and that was the best result that could be produced under the circumstances. Where a man uses a dangerous weapon it is a case for imprisonment, and I must indict a substantial sentence in this case." Tlie prisoner, who is aged H, burst into tears.

Tn the Supreme Court decrees nisi wore granted to Thomas Donovan, saddler, against his wife on the grounds of adultery with Williamson Robertson, with whom Donovan alleged his wife contracted a bigamous marriage in January, 1!MM: to Frank Clarke, of Waihi, against Mary Ann Clarke, for misconduct; tor John Marshall, of Kawakawa, against' Hilda Marshall, for misconduct with' John Smeath; to Ernest Arthur Carter against Ellen Maud Cartel', for desertion; to Margaret Stewart against William Stewart, of Dunedin, for misconduct and desertion.
