WAITARA NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tlie Waitara Fire Brigade has accepted the tender of Mr. Evan Jones for the supply of uniforms. At the monthly meeting of the school committee held on Monday evening, the chairman reported that with the secretary he had visited the school on the opening morning and found everything satisfactory. The. door and skylights put in by the Board would prove of great benefit. It was resolved to apply to the Borough Council to connect the water supply at a cost not exceeding £3 per annum. The master's report showed an increase of 11 pupils, making the roll 315, but the attendance in the first week was the poorest for some time, the average being only 203. It was decided to hold the annual picnic on the 24th at a place to suit parents and children. The chairman and secretary were authorised to wait on the Education Board at their next meeting with a view to asking for a £ for £ subsidy up to £lO for the purpose of erecting two shelter sheds. The band is holding a concert and dance on Thursday evening in aid of the contest funds. Professor Towns gives a spiritualistic fifteen minutes with his medium "Starlight," and an hour's mirth, magic and mystery. With vocal items and the rendition of solos by members an enjoyable evening's programme will be provided. The band leaves for Palmerston by mail train on Monday. A good deal of bush burning has been going on in the back blocks this season, with more or less luck. Those who have had the patience to wait are now rewarded with good burns. Quite a number waited until this week, and all report that burns have been exceptionally good, in fact, the best for many seasons.
