AMUSEMENTS
TO-NIGHT. "THE LION AND THE MOUSE."
To-night at the Theatre Royal Mr. J. C. Williamson will present for the first time to New Plymouth play-jr'iers America's greatest actress, Miss Kathorine Grey, the brilliant romantic actor, Mr. William Desmond, and an exceptionally strong supporting company, in Charles Klein's world-famous dramatic sensation, "The Lion and the Mouse." The news of Miss Grey's conquests in Australia and of her more recent triumphs in Wellington, Dunedin and Christehurch, has excited the interest of local play-goers to an extraordinary degree, and judging by the splendid booking recorded at Collier's, the actress, who has been favorably compared with the great Sarah Bernhardt, will be welcomed by a record house. The character of Shirley Rossmore, the young daughter of Judge Rossmore, who fights earnestly and desperately through four acts of a'strenuous play, for her father's life and honor, gives Miss Grey every opportunity to exhibit her wonderful emotional powers in the great third act, where she at first pleads piteously for Judge Rossmore's life, and then in a tragic scene denounces the millionaire for his cruel and ferocious methods, the brilliant actress is said to rise to the very height of her dramatic genius. Critics elsewhere declare that Mr. William Desmond more than fills the gap created by the departure of Mr. Julius Knight and his brilliant representation of the character of John Burkett Ryder, the millionaire, is ranked amongst his greatest triumphs. The supporting company is about the strongest yet sent on tour by Mr. J. C. Williamson, including as'it does Mr. Cyril Mackay, who will appear as Jefferson Ryder; Mr. Leslie Victor, as Hon. Fitzvol Bagley; Mr. T. W. Lloyd, as Judge Rossmore; Mr. Winter Hall, as Senator Roberts; Mr. Boyd Irwin, as ex-Judge Stott; Mr. J. B. Athohvood, as Re"-. Pontiles Beetle; Mr. George"»Chalmers, as Jorkins; Mr. T. W. Foster, as Expressman; Miss Susie Vaughan, as Mrs. John Burkett Ryder; Miss Maud Wingfield, as Kate Roberts; Miss Alma Vaughan, as Mrs. Rossmore; Miss Alma Phillips, as Mrs. Nesbitt; Miss Kate Towers, as Jane Beetle; and Miss Florence Gleeaon, as Eudoxia. A feature of the representation will be the scenery, dressing and furnishings. The production is staged under the direction of Mr. David Burton. Mr. Thomas Foster is stage manager,,and Mr. George Leopold musical director. The plans are at Collier's, where day sales can also be purchased. Positively only one performance can be given by the company here as they leave for Palmerston North tomorrow. Mr. Harold Ashton is business manager for the company.
