SATURDAY COMPETITION. NEW PLYMOUTH DEFEAT LAW. Now Plymouth defeated Law at the Recreation Grounds 011 .Saturday by three runs, after a most exciting finish. New Plymouth batted first, and lo3t the first three wickets when the score stood at 17. Weston (35), Clarke (30), Coddard (23, not out), and Whittle (17), were, however, mainly instrumental in raising the total to 141 before the last wieket fell, Hill coming out with the line average of six for 47. The Law team's innings started equally inanspieiouslv, the first three wickets falling for 17, and with the fifth down for 411, of which Lash had made 23, and Clapham 10, matters looked anything but promising. Wlien, however, La wry and Hill became associated, they raised the score to 102 before the latter, who had compiled 21 by careful cricket, was caught in the outfield by his captain, who was fielding as substitute. The next two wickets fell quickly, but Harding stayed some time with Lawry before being run out, and when the last man—a boywent in 21 runs were required to avert defeat. Amidst great excitement run after run came, the lad batting well, though luckily being missed four times, but on the fifth he was well taken by Clarke for nine. The innings terminated for 138, Law thus being defeated bv three runs. Lawry carried liis bat for 48, put together by nice cricket. Scores:
