The Taranaki Rifles, under Captain Fletcher, commenced their annual camp on the usual camping ground at Waiwakaiho on Saturday. There arc 58 men in camp, all told. The officers nrc, Captain Fletcher and Lieut. Willis, of the Rifles, and Captain MacDiarmid, unattached, late of the Wellington Highland Rifles. Several members are, unfortunately, unavoidably absent, some bcin« away from the district. About forty men will remain in camp during the whole week, the remainder having to attend to their businesses during the day. These, however, have to attend parades before leaving camp in the morning, as well as on their return to camp in the evening. The camp will break up on ■Sunday, the 12th inst. An unfortunate incident occurred, owing to the boisterous wind prevailing. A large marquee had been erected as a mess tent for the men, and this was blown down, owing to the big guy ropes being broken by the force of the wind, and the tent was completely wrecked. The camp should be a success, as the officers arc determined to make it as instructive and orderly as possible.
