CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. FIRST DAY'S RACING. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christclmreh, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather. The course was in capital order. The attendance was fair, but the totalisator investments, without the bookmakers' opposition showed a marked increase, being £7807 as against £3208 last year. The racing generally was interesting, though in the chief event 01 the day Cronstadt led all the way. Results:—
Trial Stakes, 1 mile.—Aunt Sally 1, True Knight 2, Puaka 3. Also started: Darracq, Umeraboy, Milo, and Kora. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 42 l-ssec.
Hornby Welter Handicap, seven furlongs.—Merry Lass 1, Alexis 2, Zetland 3. Also started: Kilts, Grand Slara, Kohinoor, Montreal, Armstrong, Harvest, Silver Bullet, and Pretty Nell. Alexis led to the distance, where Merry Li- • ' ight him, and won by a neck. Tine, lmin 29 2-ssec.
Filly Stakes, six furlongs.—Colleen Mary 1, Aphaea 2, Flambeau 3. Also started: Martine, Directoire, Big Blast, Frivolity and Goldcoin. Aphaea made all the running, but inside the distance Colleen Mary challenged and won by a head. Time, lmin 14 l-usec. Midsummer Handicap, ly 2 miles. — Cronstadt 1, Rose Noble 2, Coroniform 3. Also started: Outlander and Lady Reina. Cronstadt dashed to the front at the start, and holding his advantage throughout, won by a length and a half. Coroniform was a head behind Rosfc Noble. Time, 2min 38 2-ssec.
Lyttelton Plate, six furlongs.—-Kham-sin 1, Avarice 2, Pleasure Bent 3. Also started: Tannhauser, Phobos, Pert, and Biarritz. Won by a head. Time, lmin 14 4-ssec.
Craven Plato, .seven furlongs. —Fasnakyle, 1, Olisono 2, Chief Lochiel 3. Also started: Sharpshooter, Prim, Boutade, Genius, Countermine, Medallist, and Queen of Spades. Won by half a length. Time, Imin 27 ]-ssec. Halswell Welter Handicap, 1 mile.— Romany Maid 1, Achray 2, Nithsdale 3. Also started: Umeraboy, Aorangi, Susa, Obligate, Ambuscade, Nightlight, Sa, pience, Veda, and Darracq. Newmarket Hack.—Rurik and Leahora. (dead heat) 1, Lady Doris 3. Also ran: Maguota, Merry Fly, Ahuapai, Puketotara, Lochiela, Gaby, Rumble, Passadena, Herrington, Avaunt. Coronella. A good race. Rurik led in the last two furlongs, but Leahora came with a fast run and made a dead heat, with Lady Doris half a length away. Time, lmin 3 l-ssec. TARANAKT. JOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club was held on Tuesday night, Mr. C. M. Lcpper (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Colonel Ellis, Messrs. A. M'L. Thomson, 0. W. Sole, \V. Weston, L. B. Webster, A. Standish, E. F. Blundell, and L. A. Nolan. i
It was decided that Perry's Orchestra be engaged to supply the music at the forthcoming Cup meeting. It was resolved that the jockeys' stand in the saddling paddock be painted. The tender of Messrs. Grayling and Cliff for tile erection of a picket fence between the outer and inner lawns was Accepted. This work will be completed for the meeting. Information is being obtained with regard to a tea kiosk.
