CORRESPONDENCE

THE HIGH SCHOOL. To the Editor. Sir, —"Justice" takes me to task for blaming the governing body for establishing boarding quarters in connection with the High School. In the course of his long screed he condemns another writer for not having read "Critic's" letter carefully. If "Justice" had exercised the same care in respect to my letter that lie recommends other correspondents to take he would have noticed that the burden of my complaint was against the policy of the Board of Governors going to the expense of starting a boardin'g-school before they had remedied the very obvious defect in the school and which has caused the present lack of confidence in the school among parents. I refer to the quality of the work achieved, which should firnt be raised if the school is t« take the place it should be entitled to as a provincial secondary teaching institution. "Justice's" opinion notwithstanding, I still think the governors committed an error of judgment in starting the boarding school at the time they did. I don't mean to say that a boarding school for New Plymouth is unnecessary per se. I only say that the Board would have been wiser to have delayed its establishment until they had set their house in order. If they had money to spare and spend, the governors might have considered the question of separating the sexes, and providing the necessary quarters. But that is another question and one which is beside the issue that has been raised.— I am, etc., JUVENIS.
