SENIOR GRADE. NEW PLYMOUTH DEFEAT INGLEWOOD. Inglewood and New Plymouth inet on the ltecreqtion Grounds yesterday in the second round of the cup fixtures, ana for the second time the town team were successful in lowering the colors of their doughty opponents, so far being the only team to accomplish this feat. The game was productive of some fine cricket) and big scoring. Inglewood, winning the toss, went first to the wickets, Pullen and B. Sutherland opening to Ingram and Bain. The score reached 40 before a separation was effected, Nicoll, who had replaced Bain, bowling Pullen in his first over. The retiring batsman had made 27, including six boundaries. Marsh, who followed, made 4 apd succumbed to Nicoll. Gudgeon replaced him, and a useful partnership ensued. The bowling was changed, Whittle coming on, but the score mounted to 93 before Sutherland got his leg in front to one of Ingram's, and retired. This batsman made 1!) as the result of steady play. Clegg did not stop long, ana the fourth wicket was down for 99. Matthews was finely caught by Bowles on the boundary for 9, and Nicholls Jailed to score. Billing then partnered Gudgeon, who was batting nicely. The latter was caught by Hasell at 132, of which he had scored 53. His was.a very creditable performance, as he was suffering from a bad knee, another player having to run for him. The next two wickets fell cheaply, but the last wicket ' put on 17, Billing being bowled by Nicoll, who was in good form, for 17, the ] innings closing for 155. Nicoll came out , with the good average of six for 47. Ai. ten minutes to five o'clock Bain and ' Lash took the field to the bowling of Gudgeon and Billing. The first-named bowler was getting a lot of work on the ball, and his initial over was a maiden. Billing bowled Lash when the score stood at seven, to which he had con-tributed-nothing. Weston joined Bain, and hit Gudgeon for four. Gudgeon's next over was a maiden, followed by. a inaiden from Billing. Two fours to Weston and one to Bain brought 20 up, and thenceforward runs came more freely. Weston, who was playing .very carefully and not giving any chanees, survived an appeal for Lb.w. At 43 Bain was out Lb.w. to Gudgeon, and Bowles went to the crease and stayed till he had scored 29, when Gudgeon got him with a ball which he played on. Weston was playing some nice strokes, and the score mounted to 105. liasell joined him, and these two treated the spectators to some nice cricket. Inglewood's total was passed shortly after six o'clock, and at the call of time the score was 198 with no separation. Weston had compiled 81 and Hasell 54. The former only, gave two chances—one a difficult' one before 20, and the other, which the wicket-keeper should have held, at 53. Inglewood were very weak in bowlers, Gudgeon, with his lame leg, having to bowl unchanged up to 136. Scores:— INGLEWOOD. Pullen, b Nicoll 27 B.
