BEET SUGAR INDUSTRY

AN EXPERT IN WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. Mr. G. S. Dyer, who has been engaged by the Victorian Government for 12 months in connection with the beet sugar industry, arrived from San Francisco by the Aorangi to-day. His father started the beet sugar business in California in 1870, and he himself is a recognised expert in that line. Speaking to a reporter this morning, Mr. Dyer said that he and his father had demonstrated that beet could be grown from Canada to Arizona, and even on the alkali lands. Farmers in America are paid 5 dollars a ton for • beet at the factory. Each ton yields 12 per. cent, sugar for sale. There is no waßte, the pulp is feed for cattle, and the molasses is used to make a composition for live stock feed, and alcohol can also be extracted from the pulp. No more skill was required to grow beet than is required for carrots and mangolds, but deep ploughing is essential.
