THE COMING SHIP. Proposing tile toast of "Grain and Shipping Interests" at the annual dinner of the Cereals and Baltic Friendly Society, London, Mr. William H. Turner said that during his quarter of a century's experience he had witnessed somj notable changes in shipping. In hid earlier days the Alaska held the blue ribbon of the Atlantic. But during the intervening years they had seen ships four or five times her size put into the water, and they were likely to see still larger ships. What the ship-owner had to face was the very quick alteration which took place in the style of tonnage required. Now we were in a state of transition. One never knew when someone would come out with a new combustion engine, and when he did goodness only knew what would become of the steamers they now had. Steam had held it 3 own for a very long time, and it would hold its own for a long time yet. But shipowners must still look ahead, for as certain as they were present that evening so certainly would they have something better than steam before another twenty-five years had passed.
