Three of these officers — Captains Seddon, Gardner and Chesney—are members of the Permanent Staff, while Lieutenant-Colonel Abbott is a , Territorial officer, with a distinguished record of service in >South Africa, where he commanded the Ninth New Zealand A . Regiment. He was mentioned in dispatches, and awarded a D.S.O.
