Mr. F. D. Acland, M.P., succeeds Mr. Mallet as Financial Secretary in the War Office, says a Press Association cablegram. Mr. F. E. Hardy, of Eltham, continues to make gobd progress towards recovery. His medical advisers now permit him to take driving exercises. According to a cable message, it is officially announced in London that the King and Queen will hold a court and levee at Dublin and Edinburgh in July.
Lord Islington arrived at the Thames last night, and was tendered a civic welcome. Later, he presided at the opening of the session of the Institute of Australasian Milling Engineers, says a Press telegram, The death ocurred at Ivaikoura of Mr. F. T. Tweemlow, who had been manager of the Bank of New Zealand there for the past four years. The deceased was operated upon for appendicitis ten days ago and appeared to be progressing favorably, but he collapsed on Saturday night. He was forty-four years of age, and leaves a widow and five children, the youngest a baby. A Wellington telegram states that Mr. E. Tregear, Secretary of Labor, who is retiring from the Government service, was entertained privately last night by the officers of the Labor Department. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Labor, presided. Mr. Tregear was presented with an illuminated address and an album containing the photograph of the permanent staff of the Department. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cummins, who for many years were in business in Hawera, Opunake, and latterly Stratford, but now of Melbourne, will regret to hear of the untimely death of their promising eldest son Bert, which occurred a few days since near Melbourne. He would nt the time of his demise be about 21 years of age. "Bert" was employed in New Plymouth about three or four years ago.—Hawera Star.
The movement among the friends and supporters of Mr. Frank Lawry, M.P., for Parnell, to make him a presentation, 13 (says the Auckland Herald) being well supported, funds coming in freely. It is intended to close the subscription list in about a week. The presentation is to take the form of a house and grounds, the section, consisting of a quarter of an acre at Ellerslie, having already been purchased.
