THE TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. COMPLETION OF PLAY. MISS BREWSTER, LADY CHAMPION. The tournament was brought to a close yesterday afternoon in fine but rather windy weather. Play in the finals was keenly followed by the spectators, of whom there was a fair number present. Jennings won the A grade handicap singles, and, with Bonnington, won the handicap doubles. Wallace and Dickie secured the championship doubles from Jennings and Nicholson after a fine game. Miss Brewster was returned the ladies' champion, and the Misses Fitzherbert pulled off the ladies' handicap doubles. The ladies' championship doubles fell to Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Payne. The final of the ladies' handicap singles (trophies valued at 21s and 10s) rests between two New Plymouth Club players, Miss L., Thomson and Miss V. Simpson, both of whom are on the receive-5 mark. The game will most probably be played on Thursday afternoon. The management of the tournament was excellent, and in this connection Messrs. H. Stocker and J. Paton, who were in charge of the secretarial work as of yore, deserve special mention for their courtesy and attention to all and sundry.
The following were the results of the day's play:— Ladies' Championship Singles. Mrs. Jones beat Miss Simpson, o—4, G—o. The final rested between Miss Brewster and Miss Jones (last year's champion). The latter commenced serving, and lost the first game, 40 —15, but won the succeeding one by the same points, and the next by 40—30. Miss Brewster then had a "love" win (2—2), and also pulled off the next two (4—2). Mrs. Jones won her service, and Miss Brewster scored twice, and won the set (6—3). Mrs. Jones opened the next set by winning, and then the ladies won turn about until 2—2 stood, when Miss Brewster had two wins in succession. Then Mrs. Jones had four wins, and won the set, B—4. Miss Brewster won her service, and play settled down for a while, both players being content not to force the game. Tins suited Miss Brewster, who placed three more games to her credit (4 —0). Mrs. Jones secured one, and then Miss Brewster had a "love" win on her opponents' service (s—l). A deuce game followed, and fell to Mrs. Jones, who lost the next and the match. o—3, 4—B, 6—2. The match was well contested. Miss Brewster places well, and her strokes have more sting in them than her opponent's, while Mrs. Jones' forte is her volleyine; she should make more use of the stroke. Miss Brewster wins the champion gold medal.
Ladies' Championship Douhles, for trophies valued at 26s each—The final was between Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Payne and the Misses Thomson, and after a dingdong go resulted in favor of the older players, 6-t-3, 6—2. Ladies' Handicap Singles.—Miss Thomson (5) heat Mrs. Jones (5), 40—20. Miss ismipson (5) beat Miss Hamilton (20), 40—20. Miss Thomson beat Miss Powdrell (8), 40—37. Miss Simpson (5) bent Mrs. Palmer (10). 40—29. Final to be played between Misses Thomson and Simpson. ■ Ladies' Handicap Doubles. Final: Misses Fitzherbert (20) beat Misses Hurle and Potior (10), 40—35, and won. This was a very short game, and at one stage Misses Hurle and Potier almost wiped off the handicap, and appeared to have the game in hand, but they fell away in play and lost as above. Men's Handicap Singles, A grade. Jennings (owe 20) heat Bonnington (owe &>)> 00—44. Final: Jennings (owe 20) beat Wybourne (scr.), IJO—4B. Wybourne led until near the end, and it seemed as if be must win. The score read 56 —49 in his favor, but Jennings scored nine out of the next service, 58—57. Wybourne had tV'-o splendid chances to score, but failed to take advantage of them, and was beaten by two points. Men's Handicap Doublee.—Jennings and Bonnington (owe 15) beat Webster and Morton (10), 60-48. The final was between Powdrcll Bros, and Jennings and Bonnington, the former receiving 12 points in CO. Jennings and Bonnington made up their handicap smartly, and were only two points behind when 20 was readied, but before they were level the score was 28; the following change of service saw them in the lead by iwo points, 32—;10. From this stage the scratch men continued winning, and tne score read 48—34. The same position existed as the end appeared in view, the scores being 58—44. Jennings and Bonnington scored the necessary two while their opponents made one, and won.
Men's Championship Doubles.—Dickie and Wallace heat Thompson and Howden, G—-2, o—2. The final between Dickie and Wallace and Jennings and Nicholson was an easy victory for the former, who had five games to their credit in the first set before losing one. They won the next game and the set, o—l. The second set was productive of a better contest,, but the upshot was another win for Dickie and Wallace, fl—4.
FITZROY v. W.Y.M.I. The return match, Fitzroy and W.Y.M.1., will he played at Fitzroy on Thursday next. The Stratford Club is bringing six men and four ladies. AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. The annual interprovincial match between representative teams of Auckland and Taranaki is to be played at New Plymouth probably on Friday, February VI. The teams will comprise six men and six - ladies.
