THE QUEEN'S SCARF.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln your issue of the 27th inst., I see mentioned in your report of the unveiling of the memorial by His Excellency the Governor, the names of some ex-South African soldiers, and among them that of P. C. Gill, with the words "Queen's Scarf" after the name. Surely there must be some error in your report. There was only one Queen's Scarf awarded to New Zealand soldiers, and this highly prized decoration was awarded to Corporal Coutts, late of the First New Zealand Contingent, and since promoted to Captain. In fairness to this gentleman, I think the matter should be made public. The trophy is an exceptionally unique one, and the fact of its having been awarded by the late QueeH Victoria makes its possession the more highly prized. I have delayed writing hoping that the matter would have been explained ere this.—l am, etc., FIRST CONTINGENT.
