PETROLEUM NEWS.
THE TAHANAKI COMPANY! There is nothing fresh to report in connection with the bores. The flow of oU from Nos. 2 and 3 is very satisfactory; if anything, No. 3 shows signs of improvement. At No. 5 the drilling operations are most promising. Engineer-Lieutenant Sydenham, th« inspector for the Admiralty, is visiting Gisborne for the purpose of inspecting the petrolucm-bearing areas of that district OIL IN THE MASTERTON DISTRICT. Mr. Hugh Morrison, of Awatoetoe, near Mastcrton, has received advice that Mr. J. D. Henry, the well-known oil expert, will visit the district at an early date (says the Wairarapa Age). He will report on behalf of an English syndicate, and should he be satisfied with the indications it is probable that boring operations will be commenced within the next twelve months. There is a spring on the Awatoetoe property which emits oil gas continuously. It is situated on the top of what is known ag "Kerosene Hill." The property has been visited from time to time by Government and other geologists, all of whom have reported favorably on the indications, and have recommended a thorough geological survey of the district. Dr. Wanner, who has reported on the oil-bearing areas of the West Coast, recently visited Awatoetoe, and spent a week in the district. He was reticent in expressing opinions, but appeared to be very satisfied with the prospects. Mr. Lang, who is also interested in the petroleum industry, visited the district some months ago, and secured options in various parts. The visit of Mr. Henry will be awaited with considerable interest.
