WAITARA NEWS
(Prom Our Own Correspondent). A start has been made with the erection of a small additjon to the altogether too small buildings used as a post oilice. The main object of tne addition is to give privacy to the .users of the telephone. .Stratford Bowling Club scored a win of 12 over the local team on Thursday afternoon, only three rinks playing. Wai-I tara ''colts" more than compensated for this in defeating the visitors by iG. The visiting skip was more than a colt, having played with the seniors last season. As a result of the recent floral fete the Fire Brigade are now erecting a station for their own use. Although not large it will meet present requirements and it is tne intention of the Brigade to enlarge as funds permit. The site is one given by the Railway Department opposite the Council Chambers. The building will be 38ft by 17ft, consisting of a reel room, 14ft by 10ft, meeting room of the same size, and a bedroom lo'ft by Bft for the use of the two men who will sleep at the station. All the work is being done voluntarily by members of the Brigade, under Mr. R. S. Sampson, who has kindly offered to supervise the main work of erection. The Brigade has started under very favorable circumstances, receiving splendid assistance in every movement made so far.
It is to be hoped that the Band's garden party this week will be a success. Bandmaster McConnell and his men are to be congratulated on the way in which they are working towards success at the coming Palmerston contest. Every night and on any other opportunity, practise is being put in, and it will not be for want of this if the Band does not succeed. Fortunately Waitara is proud of its Band and is always willing to assist financially. It costs a good deal of money to keep it going and taxes those interested, but they come up smiling each time. Some £OO or £7O will be needed to pav contest expenses, but with the garden party, a picture show next Tuesday (Mr. Saunders generously living' his usual weekly night's takings" to the funds), a concert on the following Thursday, fob'owed by the inevitable "pass round the hat," will no doubt provide sullicient for the purpose. Battallion Drum-major Lister devotes a lot of time in teaching the Band their paces, for which he deserves great credit. It was expected by"many people that the Works Committee of the Harbor
Board would have reported at last meeting on the mailer of the erection of a Slip. Sm-li.ii construction vi\k:!.l lie of great beiiclit to ship-owners. The building trade is still very brisk. Tile contractors for Mr. Snell's m >v brick building have made a start, whilst several houses are in course of const ruction.; Tt is diflicult just now to obtain the services of a carpenter. According to tile Home paper, "The Grocer," Waitara-roaei butter in quoted by salesman among a few other cliuice brands at 118s. I
Comment i.s frequently made by visitors at the inadequacy of the local railway station. No wonder! The Fire Brigade gave a good demonstration of the water pressure on Friday evening. With four leads going on one single and one double-headed hydrant, four sets were put right over the Wa.itara Hotel, and then the hydrants were not open to their full capacity. The framework of the Fire Brigade station is now complete, and the members intend to have it eovered-in dur ; ng the next few days. Pretty smart work, eh?
