FOUR MEN DROWNED
A COOGEE BEACH SENSATION. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 29, 5.5 p. in Sydney, January 29. A sensation occurred at Coogee beach, where six women and five men bathing in the surf were carried out to sea. The women and one man were rescued, but the others were drowned. Their names were Joseph McGrath, George Mackie, Sydney Hardy, and Wilson. The recent heavy rains formed a channel, in which there was a strong current.

The sea was very rough, with a strong undertow, especially in the channel sc6oped by the rush of water from the storm water channel. When the bathers got in this, they were quickly carried out. The rescuers did excellent work, Harold Baker being especially prominent in saving several although he was fully dressed.
One of the victims was brought to shallow water and told to run to the beach, but in fear, he fell down, and was again taken out and drowned.

It is believed that a fifth man was drowned at Coogee, for a man's clothing found on the rocks is unclaimed.
