A RACECOURSE RIOT
FIVE MEN FINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Friday. Five men appeared at the Police Court this morning charged "that they with certain other persons, with intent to prevent the running of the Auckland Trotting Club's races at Alexandra Park, assembled in such a manner and so conducted themselves as to cause persons in the neighborhood to fear they would disturb the peace. Simultaneously and without reasonable occasion they provoked other persons to disturb the peace tempestuously." The Magistrate, on the request of defendants' solicitor, agreed to reduce the charge to one of committing a breach of the peace, and defendants pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said the offence could not be looked at in a mild manner. Accused had given considerable trouble, and their action »might have led to bloodshed. They were each fined £5 and co.sts.
