LAWN TENNIS

SECOND DAY'S PLAY. Wet weather on Thursday night pre--1 vented play being resumed on the New 'Plymouth Club's courts at 9.30 yesterday morning as had been arranged. Fortunately, no rain fell after early morning, and a strong wind dried the courts quickly. At one o'clock rackets I were flying, and play was continued without intermission until seven o'clock. The afternoon was cool and suited the players well, but for the greater part oi the time the wind was baffling. The spectators, of whom there was an increased number over the previous day, were treated to some fine rallies in the various games, and altogether the stan. dard of play was of a high nature. No great surprises were effected, the favorites winning their games pretty well all through. Owing to the delay in getting a start, the tournament is yet in its preliminary stages, and it would be useless to attempt to forecast even the semi-finals. As the position remains, it is just possible the tournament will not be through to-day, but every effort towards completion will be made, play commencing, weather permitting, at nine o'clock this morning.
