:—♦ A London cablegram reports the death of Sir Charles Dilke, at the age of 07 years. By winning the Masterton Provincial Tennis Championship, H. A. Parker secured his hundredth win in championship events. A London cablegram reports the death of Dr. John Brown Paton, principal of the Congregational Institute, at Nottingham. Mr. R. A. Holmes, manager of the Union Bank, Wellington, has been transferred to Melbourne, where he is to ue actiiig-nianagef. Mr. Joe McCluggage has been selected by the Stratford Liberal Party to stand in the Government interest for the Stratford seat at the next election. The engagement is announced of Miss Enid Elgar, only daughter of Mr. Elgar, a wealthy pastoralist, of Fernside, Lower Wairarapa, to Captain Hamilton, A.D.C. to the Governor. Sir Francis Hopwood has definitely vacated his position at the Colonial Office, where since 1907 he lias occupied the position of Under-Secretary of State for the Colonics. The Bayly Memorial scholarship has been won by Archibald Thomas Bacon, of the New Plymouth High School. The scholarship, which is of the value of £lO a year for two years, carries with it a valuable gold medal. Mr. J. D. Henry, the English oil expert, left by the boat last evening for Auckland to attend the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers' Conference, which opens there next week. Mr. A. E. Watkins accompanied him, and will read a paper at the conference on "The Oil Industry of New Zealand."
