Jenkins read a paper on Papua at the Colonial Institute, saying that there were indications that Papua would early become one of Britain's valuable assets, and would assist in relieving the Empire from dependence on foreign supplies. (Mr. Muripy, Governor of Papua, who presided, said that the Papuan Government recognised its duty to preserve the natives from the fatal effects .of contact with European civilisation, and the only way to do that was to encourage their industry.
