EDUCATION BOARD

J MONTHLY MKICTING. The Board roumed yesterday morning, the following members being pivscnt: — Messrs J. Wide (cliairn..in,'. i.. .v. Adlam, W. C. Cargill, 11. Trimble, W. Rogers and A. Morton. RESIGNATION. Mrs. A. 11. Henderson tendered her resignation as sole teacher of the Albert school as from January 30, l'Jll.—Accepted. UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. On the motion of Messrs Cargill and Trimble, it was resolved that the inspectors be asked to report at the next meeting on the uncertificated teachers in the Board's employ, and to make recommendations for their transfer or for filling their positions, and that a copy of this report be forwarded to each memleer of the Board prior to the meeting. MEDICAL INSPECTION. The following resolution was passed at the last meeting of the Moa School Committees' Association:—"That in view of the importance of the well-being of the young, as regards the health of children, the Association would respectfully ask the Board of Education for Taranaki to take steps to'bring under tlie notice of the Education Department the urgent need of a system of medical inspection of schools and the dissemination of information regarding the care of teeth, etc., believing that such system would prove of immense benefit to the rising generation." The Association is to be informed that the Board understands that the Health Department has the matter of medical examination of school children under consideration. MAINTENANCE- GRANTS. The amount allotted to the Board for the current year is- £-2409, the grant being made primarily fur the following purposes:—(a) To provide for maintenance and repair of school buildings, furniture, fittings, etc.; (b) to meet the cost of rebuilding worn-out schools, and of re-plac-ing worn-out furniture, fittings, fencing, etc.; (c) to provide for all new furniture and fittings required by increase of attendance at existing schools, or by the' establishment, of small or temporary schools not provided for by special grant. The amount to be expended upon additions in any year is not to exceed seven per cent, of the grant for the year, and the additional floor space provided in any one school or residence during the year is not to exceed 400 square feet. STAFFING SECONDARY SCHOOLS. Air. Cargill moved: "That in the event of the Department replying that they are unable, to give effect to the suggestions of the Stratford School Committee for the staffing of the secondary department, that fresh applications be invjted for the vacancies."—Seconded by -MY- Trimble and carried. CONTINUATION CLASSES. Mr. T. If. Penn, secretary of the" Stratford District High School Committee, wrote asking the Board to put into operation section 18 of "The Education Act, 1010," requiring the attendance of young persons within the school district at continuation and technical classes.

The Board approved of the application, but resolved to defer taking' action until receiving further information with regard to regulations from the Department, and that the Department be applied to for a model set of regulations. NEW COMMITTEEMEN.

Mr. Joseph Goble has been elected a member of the Dudley Road School Committee in place of Mr. R. Baddeloy, who forfeited his seat owing to absence from more than three ordinary meetings. Mr. L. S. Hart has been elected to the Okato School Committee in place of Mr. Metcalfe, who had- resigned, as he was leaving the district. SCHOLARSHIP REGULATIONS. The attention of the Board was drawn by the Assistant-fnspector-General of Schools to the provisions relating to scholarships as contained in sections 5 duios tou op as.n|X - W a W }° 0 l >UTt into force until July next, but from that date it is essential that anything to the contrary in the Board's regulations should be altered. As the Act will necessarily apply to the next scholarship competition and to any preliminary arrangement, the Department would be glad to have the Board's proposals for adjustment of the regulations where required. GENERAL. The Midhirst Co-operative Dairy Co. asked for a lease of the balance of the land not required by the Board after the erection of the Ackland school.—Beferrcd to 'Mr. Rogers for report. The Board will raise no objection to the Kaimata School Committee erecting a dairy room and opening a doorway out of the'shelter-shed into the room, provided the Board is put to no expense. The Education Department forwarded a sample of printed temperance wall sheet. The sheets contain the' syllabus in temperance instruction proposed to be included in the regulations. To save trouble.and expense to the Board the Department was prepared to forward the sheets to the schools direct unless the Board itself would prefer to undertake the distribution.

The necessity of. a track from the Radnor road to'the Denbigh school Was urought under the notice of the Board by the Denbigh School Committee, and it was resolved "to refer the matter- to Mr. Rogers for a report. The Ngaere School Committee were granted a subsidy up to £2 7s. The requests of the Tai'urutangi School Committee to erect a shelter-shed in iron and also for drain pipes were agreed to. •It was resolved that application be made to the Department for a new residence at Lincoln. The Finauce Committee will present a report of the estimated receipts and expenditure for the present year at the next meeting.
