Following is the High Commissioner's cabled market report under date London, Januuary 21. (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): Mutton.—The market is steady, and stocks of New Zealand small, but high prices are restricting business in the market. The supply of Australian and River Plate meets demand, and they are selling freely. Canterbury cannot, be quoted, North Island 4'/ b d, Australian 3'/ B d, River Plate 3%d. Lamb. —There is dull sale for all lamb, and the market has reclined. Canterbury 5 7 / s d, other than Canterbury 5%d. Beef.—The market is firm, and stock on hand small, with good inquiry, especially for fores. New Zealand hinds 3y,d, New Zealand fores 3d. Butter.—The market is firm, with more inquiry at higher prices about the beginning of this week, but the market closed rather quiet. Choicest New Zealand 110s, occasionally Ills, Australian 105s, Danish litis, Siberian 103s. The Arawa shipment arrived in good condition. Cheese. —The market is firmer. The Arawa shipment arrived in good condition and met with brisk demand. Colored oils, white 57s Gd.
Hemp.—The market is quiet, and small business doing at about the quotations already given, viz., New Zealand good fair spot per ton £2O ss, fair grade £lO 15s, fair current Manila £l9, forward shipment about the same. The output from Manila for the week was 30,000 bales.
Wool. —The market is stronger. - Cocksfoot Seed. —The market is quiet, but firm. New crop weighing 191b per bushel per cwt was ofl'erecl at SOs, bin found no buyers. Kauri Gum. —The market is quiet, bui holders are firm. Small business is doing and prices are weak. Quotations (nominal), ordinary to fair threequarterseraped £8 2s Gd, fair half-scraped 97s (id, brown fair half to threcquarterscraped SOs, brown pickings common to good 455, bush fair to good pale ana amber-scraped £S. Stock, 337 tons. Eggs Cold-stored Italian 10s Od to 12s per 120, Austrian Ss 3d to 10s, Danish lis Gd to 13s Gd. TARAXAKI WOOL, SKIX, HIDE AXD TALLOW iSALE. mi. XEWTOX KIXG'S REPORT. On Tuesday, January 17. I held my usual sale of above produce, when I offered a catalogue of 191 bales and 22,~> sacks of wool, 2789 sheeps'kins, 29 casks and ID tins tallow, 829 hides and 140.") calfskins, and the usual assortment of bones, horsehair, etc. Wool was much easier, in consequence of the fall reported from London since my last sale. Good bright crossbred declined %d per lb, and whole stained and inferior lleece was fully Id lower. Woolly sheepskins were y.d to Id helow last sale's prices. Pelts in most cases sold at late rales. Goodconditioned heavy ox hides showing sub-' stance advanced %d to %d, one line selling a.s liigli as 8d per lb, or sls per hide. Average lines of cow hides also advanced %d to Vid, but damaged and inferior I lines did not sell very well, and in some cases were Vid lower. Tallow declined Is 3d to Is Gd per cwt. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., have received cable advice from their London house dated ISth and l'Jth inst., regarding the following markets: — Wool. —Sales continue more animated. Crossbreds, fine quality, 5 per cent, lower as compared with closing rates of last series. .- Sheepskins.—Merino prices are lower by '/.d per lb. Crossbred prices are lower by '/.il to %d per 11). Tallow. —Low and inferior descriptions are par to 3d per cwt higher, other descriptions (id per- cwt higher. There is an increasing demand for mutton. Lamb.—Prices are %d to y,d lower. We quote: New Zealand prime Canterbury light (Id lb, North Island light sy.d to 5y s d. Australian fair demand. .Mutton. —Very poor demand owing to large supply. Prices unchanged. Beef. —Rather better demand owing to small supply, '/ s d per in higher. The Xew Zealand Loan and Mercantile, Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London house under dale 10th inst: — Sheepskins. — Combing merinos and clothing descriptions, short and shorn sheepskins and crossbred lambs have declined '/, d; and crossbred combing %d per lb. Wool.—-The sales progress firmly, but there is little American demand for crossbred wool. Mr. Newton King has received the following cable from bis Sydney agent re hides: "Heavies firmer."
