WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, January 21,

The annual championship tournament of the Wellington Provincial Tennis Association opened this morning. The weather was fine, but rather windy. There are record entries, including all the leading players of New Zealand. Details:—

Men's Champion Singles.—First round: H. W. Brown (Wellington) defeated J. i). S. Ileaton (Masterton), o—4, O—O.

Ladies' Champion Singles. Firs! round: Miss E. Travers (Wellington) heat Miss R. Hughes (Pahiatua), o—4 li—1; Miss M. Simpson (Wellington) beat Miss L. D. Hughes (Pahiatua) 0-3, o—2; Miss R. Welhvood (Hastings) beat Miss L. K. Hughes (Pahiatua) o— l, [\—i: Miss Xunnelcy ( Wellington) beat Miss D. Bell (Xelson), o—o, o— \)\ Miss A. L. Brewster (New Plymouth) beat Miss D. Booth (Carterton), o—2 o—l.

Fisher and Parker (Wellington), Cox (Dannevirke), Aitketl (Masterton), Bonningtou and OliiVer" (Gllrlstchurch) remain in the Men's Singles. Misses Turton, Nunnelev and Travers (Wellington), Welhvood (Hastings), and Brewster (New Plymouth) remain in the Ladies' Singles.

The best .game of to-day was in the second round of the Combined Champion Doubles, when Fisher and Miss Wellwood beat Brown and Miss Nunnelcy O—l, o—4.

THE TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. Entries close to-night for the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association's tournament, to be held on the New Plymouth Club's courts in Vivian street this week, commencing on Thursday afternoon. Mr. IT. Stacker is receiving the entries, and will be at his oflicc during the evening. The courts arc in excellent order, and it is hoped that the entries from within the province will be large, particularly .ajyLrafos.
