THE MOUNTAIN HOUSE

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The North Egniout Mountain House'j committee met at the secretary's (Air. | H. Stocker's) oll'ice last evening, when the chairman (Mr. W. A. Collis) reported that the finances of the committee were in a satisfactory position, better indeed than has previously been the ease. it was decided to erect a four-arm sign on the ridge near Humphries' Castle, reading, "Up the Mountain," "To the North Egmont House," "To Bell's Falls," and "To Dawson's Falls.'-' Following up from the first-named sign, rocks will be selected on which red and white crosses will be shown as a guide to climbers. It was resolved to spend a sum not exceeding £5 in opening up a new trackup the mountain from the horse paddock, the old one having become dangerous. Further, that a sum not exceeding £lO be expended in under-scrubbing a direct track from the House to the Waiwaikaiho Gorge. In the event ot the larger scheme for improved house accommodation not eventuating shortly, the committee wilj take steps to commence the smaller scheme, the chairman reporting that one firm at least had expressed its willingness to erect the necessary buildings and finance, the scheme. In connection with the £SO available for improving the road below the House, it was suggested that the matter be deferred until after the carting of material for any new buildings had passed over the road, so as to have the road ,in good order for the coining winter. The chairman reported that he baa sent wire netting up for the purpose of protecting the top of Ngatoro Gorge, as this locality was considered somewhat dangerous for any juveniles visiting the Mountain House. I Regarding the complaints re lighting fires in the reserve, the committee de- ' cided that, they would back up the Boara I without fear or favor in bringing the offenders to book, as the lighting oi fires in the reserve is absolutely prohibited. : Other routine business was transacted and several accounts were passed for payment.
