THE SUNKEN SUBMARINE
THREE HEROES PERISH. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Berlin, January 18. Submarine U3, which sank in Hickendorf Bay, has been raised. Two officers and the coxswain, who gallantly remained until the others were safe, were found dead in the conning tower. All efforts to resuscitate them failed.
A hitch in the oxygen apparatus rendered the rescue of the submarine's crew difficult.
A lieutenant, petty officer, and stoker gallantly entered the torpedo tube and effected the rescues. Some of the crew were unconscious. The three bodies in the conning tower showed slight signs of life when they were first recovered. The accident was due to a defective valve.
